Learn to Skate to Play Hockey

Want to learn to skate so you can play hockey? Our Learn to Skate for Hockey classes are the perfect first step. Designed to build a strong foundation, our program focuses on the essential skating skills needed to play hockey. Through four progressive badge levels—plus power skating—participants will develop balance, agility, and confidence on the ice. All instruction emphasizes proper hockey techniques, taught without a puck, so skaters can master the fundamentals first. Students will learn the basic hockey stance, stride, knee bend, and other key movements that set them up for success in the game.

  • Designed by U.S. Figure Skating, the Learn to Skate Program is a beginner ice skating program that is fun, challenging, and rewarding. Participation in the program will enable beginning skaters of all ages and abilities to learn the fundamentals of the sport and begin a lifetime commitment to health and wellness.

    The Curriculum:

    SNOWPLOW SAM 1-4: The Snowplow Sam levels are designed to help skaters ages 3-6 skater develop preliminary coordination and strength necessary to maneuver on the ice.

    BASIC SKILLS 1-6: These six levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, three turns, and mohawks. Upon completion of the Basic 1-6 levels, skaters will have the basic knowledge of the sport, enabling them to advance to the more specialized areas of the sport.

    FREE SKATE PRE-FREE SKATE – FREE SKATE 6: Each free skate level is comprised of a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins and jumps — all of which build on the previous skill, providing skaters a strong foundation of all elements. These levels will be taught in a positive and interactive group format such as a bridge program, circuit classes or as an introductory training program. Instructors will focus on quality and mastery of skills.

    ADULT 1-6: The Adult curriculum is designed for both beginning and experienced adult skaters who wish to improve their skating skills. Participation in the program will help promote physical fitness and improve balance and coordination while teaching proper skating techniques. This is an exciting program for people who look to skating as an enjoyable part of a fit and healthy lifestyle.
