Inclusive All-Abilities Skating Event Brings Smiles to Tulsa Families and Veterans
TULSA, Okla. — January 20th, 2026 — A joyful crowd of families, veterans, Special Olympians and skating fans took to the ice at WeStreet Ice Center this past weekend for a heartwarming all-abilities skating event that welcomed participants of every age and mobility level. Designed as a “special purpose” occasion, the event offered a range of accommodations to ensure everyone could enjoy the rink comfortably — from noise-canceling headphones to fidget tools and storybook breaks for guests who needed a little extra support.
Lori Schultz brought her daughter, a Special Olympics athlete who recently returned from a swim meet with medals. According to KJRH News, Schultz shared that her daughter loves ice skating just as much as swimming and diving, and the event gave them both a chance to celebrate that passion together.
According to KJRH News, Tulsa father Sean Novak praised the community’s support for families with special needs, noting that inclusive activities — whether at playgrounds or at the ice center — make Tulsa a welcoming place for everyone.
The rink atmosphere was full of cheer, even when young skaters took spills. One enthusiastic participant, Gunner, laughed off a tumble as part of the fun, saying he got back up and kept skating with a smile.
In addition to families and kids, local veterans were out in force. Members of the Tulsa Warriors — a group made up of disabled veterans and service members from branches including the Marines, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force — joined the festivities, sharing camaraderie and encouragement with fellow skaters.
The event welcomed guests using wheelchairs, sleds, strollers, and traditional ice skates in an inclusive setting where every fall was met with encouragement to get back up and try again.
Organizers and participants alike celebrated the chance to bring the community together on the ice for a day of fun, friendship and spirited skating. Check out the article KJRH News wrote about this event here: All abilities skating event brings joy to Tulsa families and veterans.
